Is It True?

I have often hear people say this about singing.

"I don't have talent."

"I am not a born singer."

These remarks bring up a question.

Are singers born or trained?

The simple truth is, since everyone can speak and our vocal cords are
all about the same. I believe that everyone who has the "heart" to sing
can indeed sing.

Perhaps the real comment is that, not everyone can sing to the same level of
vocal quality. But that doesn't mean some are born singers and some are not.

Let the "not singers" be aware.

The truth is, if the "not singers" wish to sing, they through proper training, can
and will be able improve and up their level of vocal quality. Like a runner, who
needs to train constantly to improve her stamina.

Singers to be, would also need to constantly train and practise their singing.

So the next time you hear someone say "I am not a born singer."

Do reply, "I beg to differ."

I agree with you completely. I taught voice for many years, and found that almost all my students - regardless of innate talent - could learn to sing. The keys are in the student-teacher relationship, the teacher's qualifications, and the student's willingness to practice every day.

Thanks for an inspiring post!

I run several choirs and singing groups in the UK that are founded on the principle that everyone can sing regardless of background, experience or training. Over the last 10 years I have dealt with hundreds of people and have not yet found anyone who can't 'sing'. My work is based on so-called Natural Voice principles. Check out the NVPN website for more information on our philosophy. Also check out my own blog which talks each week about singing: From the front of the choir.

Good luck with your singing journey!

Singingman - I loved both your sites, and couldn't agree with you more. Especially love the philosophy behind your Natural Voice website.

Best regards to you!
